Sign #6 – Earthquakes, Sign #7 – Upheavals in Nature

Our study today will be on Matthew 24:7 where we will take a look at earthquakes and upheavals in nature. These signs are numbers six and seven in our study of the twenty-eight current trends that the return of the Lord is near. “For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.” (Matthew 24:7)

Does it seem to you that we hear about earthquakes more often today than ever before? Of course, one of the reasons is because there is more media coverage today but let’s take a look at the last two years and how they compare to earthquake activity from just ten years ago. For instance, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, in 2015 there were 103 earthquakes but in 2005 there were only 46 earthquakes in the world. Then, in 2014 there were 109 earthquakes as compared to 2004 with only 48 global earthquakes. These recorded earthquakes were at magnitude levels of 2.5 or higher; however, smaller earthquakes occur several hundred times a day. And, if you study this further you will learn that in the last twenty years 80% of the major earthquakes in recorded history have occurred in just the last ten to fifteen years.

As Believers, we look at these numbers and understand that through our knowledge of God’s Word, these numbers represent a trend. These statistics show us a sign but for those who do not understand the Word of God; a movement in the earth’s mantle that leads to an earthquake in divers places does not matter to them. It will mean no more than, hey, there’s another earthquake! Well, earlier this year there was a 7.0 earthquake in Russia and to almost everyone who read this news felt as though it did not affect them, right? But what does this say to someone who studies scripture? It says that the earth has started to shake!

Almost every news station today is reporting changes in our climate and these changes cause an increase in drought and flooding. Often times the areas affected are some of our most productive agriculture lands and the results can cause a shortage in our food supply. And, infectious diseases also play a role in the balance and upheaval of nature. We have witnessed global changes in world travel that have been caused by the Ebola Virus, SARS, and the West Nile Virus. These are diseases that are sometimes fatal and could quickly rise to epidemic proportions if not controlled. To those who are alter, all of these happenings point to signs and trends that are changing the world.

So, as Believers in Jesus Christ, what must we do to increase our faith and remain steadfast and unmovable during these signs and trends? We must read our Bible and understand what Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 24 about the signs that will alert us and prepare us for His second coming. We must trust in His leadership to develop us into men and women who will not be moved when the earth starts to shake.

Be blessed, Sebastian.
